I've started myself a new world and I've been told about the underworld or something... and that I need to build a portal with obsidian...

 

WELL... can I find diamond in this new world? Can I heck! In the tutorial world there was loads of it underground near lava. Can't find anything in this world... although I've probably explored a small percentage of it!

Yes, when I played Minecraft it was a case of if first you don't succeed, try, try, try, try, try again. Diamond isn't necessary near lava, but it's around the save level that lava can be found. I used to just dig nice long lines and put up torches to protect me from the creatures of the night.
