CC4 & Laptop with Saved Files on the Desktop When User Logged on with Temp Profile

We're a CC4 network.

 

A user has a school issued laptop which is intended solely for VPN use at home. Unbeknown to us they are using it in school, but not connecting it to the network.

 

Yesterday, they logged in, created a folder on the desktop, saved some really important files there, then were amazed when they logged off and then on again to find it had disappeared....

 

A scan of the hdd with Recuva hasn't shown anything. Are they well and truly stuffed?

As far as I was aware, CC4 redirects the Desktop folder to the My Settings folder, if you connect this laptop to the network and logon and logoff a few times with this user account, maybe it will update the profile with the server and the file might reappear?

Yeah by default I think CC4 redirects the desktop folder. Have you checked on the server to see if you can find the file there?

 

For us the file structure is \\server\RMUsers\Usergroup(i.e. students, teachers)\Profiles\individual profile folders

 

Find the profile folder for that user and check the desktop folder inside that. There may be multiple versions of their profile folder labeled "name.v2", etc so check the ones that have been accessed most recently. Not sure what generates the different versions (assuming health check/profile resets).

 

If the file is there make a backup of it and then run a health check on that user under the CC4 RMMC. Ours messes up user profiles fairly regularly here and running the health check normally sorts it out and they should then be able to access the folder.

 

Of course it might be the other way round that they had saved it locally to the laptop then logged in and it has redirected the desktop to the server so they cannot see the local version anymore. In theory if this happened the folder should still be there under C:\Users\Username\Desktop
