Filming Club

Hi ,

 

Was thinking of introducing a film club for ks2 students - any ideas on equipment that I could buy e.g video cameras that are sturdy and child friendly but a bit more than just the old Digiblue type of thing. We have tripods in school already.

 

Also, any ideas on how to run a successful filming club where I (and maybe some help) could engage students to create a storyboard and then film etc...

Depends on what you are looking to do and your budget. But some ideas for basic low budget you could try looking at Go Pro Heros or even sometimes just using IPads to film with. Or you could look at some HD Camcorders.

Go pro (or equivalent) are an interesting idea because the quality is good and they are pretty darn rugged so no worries about kids dropping them - also small and with some cool aftermarket parts easily attachable to heads/arms/equipment/cars for some more interesting creative shots.

I would have to disagree with the Go Pro idea. Yes they are a great camera but they are for a very specific type of filming. I would actually suggest purchasing some standard video cameras like the Panasonic HC-V160EB-K.

You could always add a GO Pro style camera as well.

 

If teaching it I would teach the basics of video with a standard camera rather than anything fancy.

 

Some ideas:

- Write a story

- produce a story board (scene by scene)

- camera positioning, dont need to be centre of image.

- what are there favourite films and why, what makes them engaging - fast paced shots, slow paced shots

- BBC school news report

Different idea but very easy to control - one of our teachers runs a stop motion animation club. Covers all of what your talking about but you can use standard webcams, I would suggest that as a starting point before going out and spending on new cameras for a club that might not take off, plus it gives them a natural progression once you have the interest?
