Mac Server caching service on a school network (WAN) on LgFL?

Hi All,

 

I've just been reminded by someone that this 'caching service' does not work on our school's LEA WAN (see below), I'm just wondering if anybody has this working on an LgFL/TRUSTnet/Atomwide solution?

 

Apple offer a caching service for their apps and iOS updates. The way that this works is by informing the apple App Store servers that any traffic coming from a particular IP should go to the caching server for apps instead of the store. This is unfortunately not compatible with a schools WAN as there is only one public facing IP, so every school on that WAN tries (and fails due to restrictions) to go to that server in the one school that is running it. The result is that no school under the WAN (currently our schools) can download apps. This is resolved by switching off the caching service.

 

Not really a resolution...

P.S. Anyhow, I wonder.... If Apple had known how big it was going to be with every teacher wanting the 'new shiny thing' (so I don't have to teach), would they have marketed it and created products and services easily used in schools (not that teachers care if it's easy to manage or maintain these things)? If so, they would have doubled or even tripled their market share in education....
