Windows 10 Create a 'Gold' Image / Problems with Sysprep

Hi as anyone got a definitive step by step way of producing a 'generalised sysprepped' image of windows 10 (education) for deploying via FOG / WDS etc? evrerything seems to be really 'bitty' and unreliable

I tried Sysprepping W10 but couldn't get it to work (though I've never used Sysprep before so it's likely I was doing something wrong.)

I'm just using the W10 Education .iso downloaded from VLSC, with the .wim slightly modified before uploading it to WDS to remove some of the crud.

 

It's not perfect, though.

dont remove apps before sysprepping or it fails iirc you can dism them from the dvd source before installing and t will sysprep fine but if you remove say mail in windows and sysprep iirc sysprep will fail

Use MDT. There's no such thing as a gold image. Windows update happens every month.

We've just started to use WDS/MDT after using ghost for 12+ years. After a bit of testing it works great. I have a really good document however i cant remember where i got it from. Ill upload it tomorrow when i get into work.

 

Just to add, we are re-doing our images from.education to enterprise ltsb. That way i can dish out the updates whenever i like.

Yes its for windows 7 but it works for windows 10.

In addition to not removing apps (Modern/Metro) I also don't do updates for Metro Apps as in the past with 8/8.1, if you updated the Metro Apps then try sysprep, it would fail.

 

I have yet to create my first Windows 10 Image, mostly because we are still dealing with 7 / 8.1. Windows 10 is far to buggy for us to recommend as a daily driver. November Update (1511) caused way too many problems. But eventually I will bite the bullet.

You're also not licensed to use Enterprise IIRC?

I'm sure someone was saying we have to use Edu?

Not according to this.. if its on my OVS agreement, ill get it installed. Ive just spoken to my supplier and they say if its on the agreement we can use what ever.

That said, it looks like you can use either Enterprise edition now as long as your volume licensing agreement has Software Assurance.

 

Unless I am imagining it older versions of the document said you couldn't use the Enterprise edition (only Education and Enterprise LTSB).

Thanks for all replying, some usefull hints, thankfully I found out that the best solution all round is to use Win 10 Enterprise LTSB as against 'Education' I can't help thinking which idiot at Microsoft would considered putting cxxp like Candy Crush on a Education release of Windows. Also I cannot see how any of the Store Apps would be applicable in a school anyway due to most of the functions will be addressed by Moodle, 365, Frog etc. As another point about using 'Gold' image yes it is true they become out of date due to updates but that is easily addressed update services when in situ. The reason we use default images is because we deploy systems using FOG a linux based image distribution system that knocks spots off everything else for speed ease of use and automation anyone interested see https://sourceforge.net/projects/freeghost/

I'm suprised by the amount of schools/colleges going LTSB. Yes its a bit of work writing a powershell script to get rid of the provisioned apps. But beneficial having reader or edge is beneficial over adobe reader. The universal apps security is better than the desktop app. MS want organisations to use edge and it is fast. It does need more group policies and features. Though we are used to IEs Huge amount of GPO/gpp. Be interesting trying to go from 1511 to 1602 etc.

I read that edge is getting a major update sometime soon, i cant remember if it was 2016 or 2017 but knowing my luck, it will come out once we have the images setup ans just about to be deployed.
