No Start Menu on Initial Logon

Yeah it only happened on the first logon. Log off and on again and it was fine. I still have some config to do on my image yet. Might remove more things with powershell and see where it gets me.

We experienced the same thing on our laptops, using Win 10 Pro build 10586. So I don't think this is related to Applocker or the Win 10 Edu release. I'm using classic shell as a temporary fix until this is resolved, and so far had no issues. Unfortunately, without full screen mode, classic shell isn't an option for our tablets, so they'll have to stick with 8.1 for now.

 

I suppose as a compromise, you can still install Classic Shell, but leave the option to run Metro (on the Start Menu), which is the default behaviour unless you remove it.

haha yup I spent quite a while with the orginal release ripping out all the metro apps, running into sysprep issues more than once because of it (It really hates you doing it!)

 

The LTSB is just the way to go - None of the metro junk & you get a stable build for a year+. The standard builds require you to update your PCs fairly often & the process is a nightmare, I read that one chap on here found it quicker & easier to just reimage his rooms when the November build came out & tbh, the features in the November build aren't worth the hassle.

I had a default profile working using the copyprofile method but it increased logon times dramatically (I always did it this way under windows 7..) In the end I decided to apply everything I used to do on the profile via GPP registry entries instead - Login times are ultra quick now as a result.

If you do it that way, does it allow users to customise their own start menu at all? And what's the behaviour when you install a new program?

The start menu is redirected so it's still locked down - I have a start screen .xml set in policy so they can't customise it. New programs I just add to the redirected start. Looks like this (Staff)
