Impossible VLAN Question?

Currently switches are manually configured with all necessary VLANs and ports changed to match the device on the end of the port for VOIP, Door Access, CCTV etc.

 

Is there any way that switches can be configured so that if the device is moved socket locations say in an office that the switches can pick up the devices MAC address and automatically assign the port to the VLAN?

 

If not, is there any other way to dynamically work with VLANs rather than requiring manual intervention from devices move location?

Yes via Mac based authentication on a radius server. You would need to tell us what sort of switch it get a more meaningful answer though.

I already have RADIUS set up for switch authentication to login in to manage the switches so might already be half way there?

 

All switches are Layer 3 D-Link kit.

A quick Google gives me the manual which looks like it does support Mac based auth via radius. Didn't find a walk though set of instruction a but after 4 days of bett I could have missed it!

You can do it without a radius server on Cisco switches. Not sure on D-Link though. To be honest its that much hassle, the manual way is easier.

 

For VOIP you can configure ports to use a vlan for phones and then another for other devices. For Cisco it would be:

 

Switchport Mode Access

Switchport access VLAN 10

Switchport Voice VLAN 20
