Hello,

Suddenly out of no-where, one of our users is having problems opening any Word documents. When she attempts to open any document from her home folder (H:\), the staff shared area (J:\) or the student shared area (K:\) it comes up with multiple error dialogue boxes: (Yes it shows the same error messages in the same order twice)

The drive or network connection that the shortcut 'global$ (curricsvr1) (G) - Shortcut.lnk' refers to is unavailable. Make sure that the disk is properly inserted or the network resource is available, and then try again.

The drive or network connection that the shortcut 'Shortcut to Printing on 'curricsvr-01'(I).lnk' refers to is unavailable. Make sure that the disk is properly inserted or the network resource is available, and then try again.

The drive or network connection that the shortcut 'Spiritual life.doc - Shortcut.lnk' refers to is unavailable. Make sure that the disk is properly inserted or the network resource is available, and then try again.

Once all of those dialogue boxes have been acknowledged, the document will then show and work.

What makes the situation more bizzare is that we replaced our entire server and desktop infrastructure over the summer, including creating an entirely new domain, including new user accounts (manually copying the data from the old home folders to the new home folders). So the location of the shortcuts it is looking for no longer exist, as the servers and domain that they were on no longer exist, and she is using a different physical computer than when these shortcuts existed.

I have deleted their profile off the machine and rebooted, but the problem still exists.

I have used a completely newly imaged computer, and the problem still exists.

If I log onto the same computer as another user, it works perfectly fine, even when opening the same document that failed for the user, works on this user account.

Some basic information:

OS: Windows 8.1 Enterprise x64

Profile information: The profile is NOT mandatory and stored locally on the machine (NOT re-directed) and it is NOT deleted automatically.

I am currently stumped! Can anyone help?!

Are these actually shortcuts though?

As they'll have the "start in" value set, which will attempt to access that e.g. "old server/user path", and then time out and just open the file once the error is closed.

Unfortunately not, they are the actual .doc files and the issue does not occur when another user opens the same file.
