Procurve Edge Ports - Do we need to manually set EDGE when AUTO-EDGE is enabled?

Hi,

 

We are looking at the number of Toplogy Change Counts on the network. We dont have any benchmark, but previously we went for 26days without a topolgy change.

Quick question, by default AUTO-EDGE is enabled on all switches. We have been advised to set EDGE on all end/edge devices. From looking at the "show spanning-tree" on every switch that we have monitored all edge devices have EDGE set to ON automatically.

 

Can anyone please confirm, if we have AUTO-EDGE enabled, do we not have to manually enable edge on (command: spanning-tree admin-edge-port) each edge port?

Would there be any benefit for setting edge manually? I know with auto-edge it checks for 3 secs for BPDUs?

Thanks Ian,

We have that document. It does go into detail about auto-edge (page 154) but doesnt really answer the question on performance benefits. I was hoping that someone had first hand experience setting up SPT.
