Continuing with the ongoing tradition of holiday gifts to the PowerShell community, we are excited to announce the release of Windows Management Framework 5.0 RTM.

 

WMF 5.0 RTM brings new management technologies such as Just Enough Admin (JEA), PowerShell Classes, PackageManagement, PowerShellGet, etc. and improvement to existing technologies such as Desired State Configuration (DSC), PowerShell Script Debugging, Software Inventory Logging (SIL) etc. to downlevel systems.

 

WMF 5.0 RTM replaces WMF 5.0 Production Preview, and is the fully-supported version many of you have been waiting for. You can now deploy the latest features of PowerShell in your production environments.

 

WMF 5.0 RTM is now available for download via the Microsoft Download Center. You can read (and contribute to) more about these new functionalities and improvements in WMF 5.0 RTM release notes.

 

Currently, WMF 5.0 RTM is supported on Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows Server 2012 and Windows 2008 R2 SP1. You’ll need .NET Framework 4.5 installed to run WMF 5.0, which can also be downloaded from the Microsoft Download Center, as needed.

For those wondering about Windows 10...

 

Relation between PowerShell version in WMF 5.0 and Windows 10

PowerShell version (5.0.10240.16384) that ships in Windows 10 RTM is supported like any other Windows component that ships in Windows 10 RTM. Supported versions of WMF 5.0 will ship the same PowerShell codebase that ships in Windows 10 RTM along with additional fixes that address customer reported gaps and bugs. The version of PowerShell that will be available in WMF 5.0 RTM will come to Windows 10 through a future update. (Source)

Edit (24/12/15). Windows Management Framework (WMF) 5.0 currently removed from Download Center

 

We recently released Windows Management Framework (WMF) 5.0 RTM delivering many requested improvements and fixes, via the Microsoft Download Center as announced in a previous blog post. However, we have discovered a bug which resets the PowerShell module environment during installation. As this issue can have a serious impact on our customers, we are taking the action to stop delivery of WMF 5.0 RTM, and have removed the packages from the Download Center. Additionally, we will be unpublishing Azure DSC Extension Handler versions 2.11 and 2.12 as they automatically install WMF 5.0 RTM.

 

We will deliver a revised WMF package as soon as the issue can be isolated, corrected, and validated. This issue only impacts users that have installed WMF 5.0 RTM (KB3094174, KB3094175, KB3094176), and does not affect preview versions of WMF 5.0, including WMF 5.0 Production Preview. We will publish further updates regarding a new WMF package to this blog post.

 

Specifically, this bug resets the PSModulePath environment variable to default values, losing any changes made prior to the WMF 5.0 RTM installation. If you have already installed WMF 5.0 RTM, this issue has already affected you - we will provide guidance on moving forward to the new WMF packages as soon as we have validated a fix.

Windows Management Framework (WMF) 5.0 RTM packages have been republished

 

Today, we have republished the Windows Management Framework (WMF) 5.0 RTM packages for Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows Server 2012, Windows 2008 R2 SP1, Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 SP1 to Microsoft Download Center. These packages replace previously released WMF 5.0 RTM packages and WMF 5.0 Production Preview packages.

 

Important Note: For systems running Windows 7 SP1 or Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, you’ll need WMF 4.0 and .NET Framework 4.5 or higher installed to run WMF 5.0.

 

We want to extend our sincere thanks to the PowerShell Community for your continued patience and support while we were addressing the PSModulePath issue found in the previously released WMF 5.0 RTM packages.

Changes in the republished packages

• The KB numbers of these packages (KB3134758, KB3134759, and KB3134760) are different than previously released WMF 5.0 RTM packages (KB3094174, KB3094175, and KB3094176).
  
• These packages have fixes only for the PSModulePath issue compared to the previously released WMF 5.0 RTM packages.

You must uninstall previously released WMF 5.0 RTM (KB3094174, KB3094175, and KB3094176) packages.

 

No impact to Windows 10 and Windows Server 2016 Technical Preview builds

Windows 10 and Windows Server 2016 Technical Previews builds are not impacted by the above mentioned PSModulePath issue. This issue was only impacting down-level systems where WMF 5.0 RTM can be installed.

We are pleased to announce that we are releasing the Windows Management Framework (WMF) 5.1 today via the Microsoft download center.

 

WMF 5.1 upgrades Windows 7, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2012, and Windows Server 2012 R2 to the PowerShell, WMI, WinRM and SIL components that were released with Windows Server 2016 and Windows 10 Anniversary Edition.

Please note that for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 the installation instructions have changed significantly. Please read the Install and Configure topic in the release notes. We have removed the requirement for pre-installing WMF 4 on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2, but to do so we had create a script for checking the prerequisites that accompanies the MSU in a ZIP file. This affects only Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. The Install and Configure topic in the release notes provides details on using the script...
