Smoothwall Category Groups help please

Hi,

I have created a category group (Guardian » Policy objects » Category groups) called Student-Test-Category-1 which has following being ticked

Financial Services

Online Banking

Payday Loans

 

 

I also have a policy (Guardian » Web filter » Manage policies) called Student-Test-Policy-1 and which has

who- All student users

what- Student-Test-Category-1

where- Everywhere

when- Always

action- Block

 

Now when student access the finance/online banking or pay-day loan sites they get blocked page.

 

What will happen if I untick the "Online Banking" in Student-Test-Category-1 ? Will they be allowed to the Online-Banking sites ?

The way smoothwall works, is that when a page is requested the webfilter rules will process from top to bottom until a match can be found, at which point it will perform that action. If no matches are found then I think it will let the page through.

So if you have no other actions that would cover the "student" group and "online banking" (for example an all users or core blocked policy), then yeah it would go through.

 

If you are trying to allow something specific through, you would probably do better to create an allow policy for it as then you have an audit trail.

Remember if you have 2 policies covering the same thing it's the one first in the list that will be actioned, so your allow polices should come higher up in the list than your blocks.
