Swapping Fibre module from One network to another

Hi,

This is probably a really basic question and i think I already know the answer but I just need to know for sure.

We have an out building that has 1 run of fibre to it that has always been on the Admin Network (6 Workstations) and I`m wanting to move it over to the Curriculum Network (and move the workstations over accordingly)

This fibre runs back to the main network cab (to an admin switch), Am I correct in thinking its just a case of physically moving over the fibre from the Admin Switch (in the Main network cab) to a spare fibre module port on the Curriculum?

Is there any other configuration i need to do after moving it over?

I've never had to do this before so just airing on the side of caution!

Assuming the switch can support the module as not all the same (size/model/settings etc), you'd need to setup the config for any VLANs etc on the switch but yes.

 

But for example if it's an old LEA Cisco switch, it won't work in HP if you're using Cisco transcievers etc.

Things to consider:

 

The port needs to be enabled

The switch may need to be the same manufacturer (not always, some HP's are fussy)

You may need to tell the port it isn't an edged port so as not to confuse STP

You may need to setup a VLAN

You may need to consider the aggregation at the other end

Yes its a 3Com switch at both ends. Currently its VLAN`d for a few Curriculum devices within that building, But that will become redundant once it moves over.
