File Server Forensics

Hi All

 

I'm looking for a piece of software that can do a bit of forensics on my file server and locate all those files that shouldn't be there.

I'd like to locate music files - ripped / downloaded dvd's that type of thing.

 

2 weeks before we break for xmas I have no doubt there are films and xmas music all over user areas.

 

Ideally free but I don't mind spending a small amount

 

Any suggestions ?

Treesize pro demo? Or you want it to be for a long time?

 

Shows file sizes by area, can do things like music/video file searches etc

WinDirStat... this is great.

I've used both Treesize (the free version) and windirstat but I'm ideally looking for something that will produce a report for me so I can name and shame the culprits.

Pro does reports and fancy graphs and what not

 

Always good to shame teachers into deleting stuff!

file server resource manager its free and built in (just not on by default) you can even use it to stop people saving .mp3 etc to any location(s) you want

WinDirStat and File server resource manager are all that you need.

Yep, when I was a BOFH, I'd use WinDirStat and then output the contents of "Dir *.filextensions /s" to a text file and use that to shame people.

 

Thinking about it, you could probably use the "cleanups" function in WinDirStat to automate this...

Might be worth seeing if you can get EduSweep up and running, though it hasn't been updated in awhile...
