grapefruit Posted December 3, 2015 Posted December 3, 2015 I've just installed Ubuntu onto an old Acer of mine and every time I start it up, log in and try to use it it freezes - GUI and beyond. It was suggested that I change the graphics driver through 'Additional Drivers' to one of the nvidia ones, which I did. Now it loads into a basic(er) startup - 2D you could say. After I log in the icons are there but the desktop is black.
mats Posted December 3, 2015 Posted December 3, 2015 Depending how old your acer is, you might find that recent releases of ubuntu are too graphics-heavy for it. I've had success with 5+ year old laptops with xubuntu and lubuntu which are lighter versions of ubuntu.
