SD card only works as Domain admin, not even local admin works

Just setup a windows 10 laptop for a teacher and have a strange issue, if i insert an SD card in the card reader as a teacher nothing happens, it does not even make the bing bing sound when it's inserted, however if I log on as my domain admin account it works.

 

All staff are members of the local admins group and I have tried disabling UAC.

 

Win 7 & 8.1 are all fine on our network. This is driving me nuts.

Does a native USB flash drive work? And are users able to correctly eject their drives? What model(s) of machine is it?

USB works instantly, drives can be ejected, its a VeryPC thinbook laptop.

Just found the card reader make and will try drivers from verypc

Well updating the driver did fix the issue but why it was fine for a domain admin is beyond me
