iOS update from OSX Server - settings from meraki???

Hi all

 

Apologies if this info is already on here (feel free to give me a link to the correct thread). I currently have 40 iPads in school, all picking up their profile settings from Meraki. This is working pretty well but I'm still learning.

 

I would like to be able to take advantage of the solitary Apple Mac in school (which has Server installed) to be a central repository for iOS updates. So that the iPads aren't downloading direct from the internet.

 

Q1) How do I setup OSX server to hold iOS updates?

Q2) Is it possible to send out settings from Meraki to the iPads so that they know where to get updates from? Does this require a combination of profiles from Meraki and Profile manager??

 

I've had minimal dealings with OSX Server in the past so am a bit stuck.

Ok I managed this myself. Turns out it wasn't difficult at all and didn't even touch the Meraki stuff.

 

The network I was using it on was a very simple 255.255.255.0 network (no VLANs) which made it SUPER simple. Just go to the Caching Service in OS X Server and switch it on!!!!! No other config necessary (as there are no VLANs ) It defaults to monitoring the subnet that the server is sat on, which is the same as the iPads as it happens.

 

Download an iOS update on one iPad, the server creates a cached copy of it. Download the same update on iPad 2 and it used the server! Easy as pie

Just turning on the caching service is not as simple as it sounds...

 

If your LA shares it's public I.P.'s across other schools and you haven't set up a static one for your server you are likely to be causing havoc as other schools iPads will be trying to contact your caching service for their updates and not getting them.

 

You need a static public I.P. for this to work as intended.

Hi @Brimstone - yes you're correct. We are using a static public IP address so we are safe.
