Smoothwall DNS since Bamburgh

I've a support call in for this as I had some DNS issues (especially with the DNS settings changing a lot since Bamburgh)

 

I used to be able to browse internal intranet sites from iPads etc. using zone bridging without using the TLD e.g. http://intranet but now I need to use http://intranet.TLD .This was fine on the old box (I hadn't installed Bamburgh on that) but the new box has been updated to the latest update and this has raised this problem. Is this by design or is there a fix ? If by design I can just change the code on the intranet site and update webclips

In Networking > DNS > Config, have you (still?) got static entries for eg "intranet" without tld?

 

We don't use local names on iPads so I haven't tried it; any service that iPads needs has a corresponding .school.org public address, but smoothwall still (currently) has statics for those. Having said that, with the new conditional forwarders in Carisbrooke I can apparently remove those entries for anything mydomain.local and .school.org but I haven't tested it yet.

Actually you're right...

 

I just loaded up my ping app on my iPhone - if I ping any of the static local addresses eg intranet, it cannot resolve the IP. If I ping intranet.mydomain.local or intranet.school.org then it works fine - all three of these are static in Smoothwall, although the latter are also in my domain DNS which are conditional forwarders in smoothwall.

Ive just logged into my smoothie and browsed to Networking > DNS > Static DNS Hosts and added "Portal" to one of my Static DNS hosts. Just logged onto the StaffBYOD WLAN, authenticated and browsed to http://portal and ive got the WAMP config page as expected.

 

Just to make sure you have your DNS settings right:

 

DNS Forwarders:

Server IP Addresses = Outside DNS addresses

Link load balancing pool or Local IP Address = Where the connection is coming from

- So ive got:

 

Server IP Addresses: 8.8.4.4 & 8.8.8.8 | 62.24.243.1 & 62.24.202.6 | 172.16.26.116 & 172.16.26.113 & 172.16.26.112

Link Load Balancing pool or Local IP Address : My Connection out - Port4 | My Connection out - Port4 | Port 1 - Main domain port

 

Conditional DNS Forwarders:

Server IP: 172.16.26.112 | 172.16.26.113 | 172.16.26.116

Domains: My Local domain | My Local domain | My local domain

 

Static DNS Hosts:

Host IP Addresses: 172.16.24.16 | 172.16.26.120 | 172.16.26.122

Host Names: wifi.mydomain.co.uk & wifi.myinternaldomain & wifi | Byodportal.myinternaldomain & portal | byodprinting.myinternalodomain & printing | files.myinternaldomain & files.myexternaldomain & files

 

Just to confirm, that if I type in http://printing:9191 it takes me to my internal papercut login page on the staffBYOD WLAN.

Have you also added DNS Proxy(53) to the interfaces under System » Administration » External access ?

 

Difficult for me to test as I'm currently on two days holiday but it's one of those things that is bugging me

Asked a colleague to check for me, adding the static hosts and the dns proxy under external access seems to have fixed it
