Hi guys,

 

I recently fixed a problem with file transfers from host to VM being slow. Not it's a problem with Veeam. I am trying to do an initial replication to the secondary virtual host. Both servers are connected with a 10Gbps Intel NICs. Both adapters confirm 10Gbps. File transfers are also slow between the hosts when I do a network copy. Getting around ~30MB/s. Any idea where the problem might be?

I verified throughput with iperf and that shows 5.68Gbps. I'm maxing the disks then but why such slow speeds with files?

What's the switch saying about life on those ports?

 

Not sure what you mean... There is no actual switch, it's a vSwitch on one port and that's how the other server connects.

You must have some connection between the two though, or was this the "10gb fibre" you mentioned yesterday?

 

If so did you turn off VMQ on the vswitch as I mentioned? :)

Yep, that's off on all of the switches. It's odd because I just did a test with iperf and I got 6Gbps (maxing out disks).

What's the raid setup though? As obviously most things like RAID 6 will have a much lower write limit than that especially through controller/cache.

 

I mean as an example 6 disk RAID6:

 

RAID Type: RAID 6 (Stripe set with double parity)

Reads 50%, Writes 50%

Number of RAID groups = 1

Number of drives per RAID group = 6

Total number of drives = 6

Single RAID group performance = 291.43 MB/s

When you say 3TB does that mean SATA too? Or they big SAS drives?

 

Also raid 5 or 6?

 

Also is this a brand new server from your other comment? As is the RAID fully initiliased yet as we had this problem before on a new server as it's still sorting its original config out

Both are brand new servers, exactly the same spec with the RAID6 array fully configured. The RAID 6 has got 6x3TB WD SATA3 drives.

I'd be looking at you're controller and RAID config. Raid 6 has a write speed penalty compared to raid 5, especially so if you're raid controller is not battery backup with 512GB+ cache. If it is a low en raid controller I wouldn't be too surprised at ~30MB/s write speed on SATA drives.

 

You can possibly test if it is the network or not by doing a file transfer to the server's local (Raid1?) drive, I would expect that to be faster, at least 50MB/s.

It's a LSI Megaraid so not that bad. I've also done some testing with crystaldisk benchmark and the max write was 180MBps so the transfer is about right.
