Does anyone know if its possible to have office 2016 sign in using the ad details the user used to login so they dont have to sign into office 365 each time?

I would love this as, but I'm sure it's not possible else why have a volume license version, when you could just download any education faculty version from any of your AD users and install it.

I'm not convinced it is possible. The high level documentation kind of suggests it is, but the more I dig the less clear it becomes.

I would have though that if you are set up with Azure AD connect and ADFS for federated identity, then on prem clients ought to automatically authenticate with ADFS and then this token can be used by office Apps to accede resources in office 365.

I am not convinced it really work this way though.
