We all know you meant the fact going forward MIS will be web api based, so the code for mobile\web will 90% the same, they will be built together, it won't be a totally separate component independently developed and most importantly, billed separately.

App code working offline is one thing. Data access and security totally different and not covered by simple 'local hosting' as a generic response...

The point about "Data access and security" is rubbish. Modern MIS will, like any cloud app or such, have been design for mobile devices, even BYOD.

@matt40k Nice to see you are deliberately skipping over the key point again... name me a mobile app for an MIS that has been designed to work online as you suggest is the future... that can work offline? TeacherApp yes (for a 'legacy' product as you like to call it, despite SIMS having 84% of the schools in the UK... I'd say current personally), Emerge Yes (same argument).

 

I don't feel there is need to make this personal with attempting to shrug off my legitimate comments by attempted smearing.

We're not saying they won't be a need for app - that would be silly. We're saying that you won't need to have buy it as a bolt-on \ add-on \ extra as it would be part of the core product. Its no longer a separate requirement! I'm not skipping the point, offline working IS a key component of a mobile app, like I said, no-one believe their phone never loses connectivity. If your building an app, it needs to have offline working, otherwise, why don't you just make your website mobile friendly?!?

With any solution, there comes a point when there has to be acceptable downtime. If our servers explode, we're gonna be without our MIS data until they're replaced and the data restored. If our internet connection goes down, we're without a cloud based MIS until we get connectivity back. There's such a possibility with every MIS, be it hosted in school or out. Having an app which locally caches data is a possible, but it then relies upon that device being available and working also...

 

You can't plan for every situation. For emergency purposes, sometimes you simply have to have a local offline hard copy of data. An export routine run on a periodic basis to ensure it is up to date is our emergency documentation. But even that we could lose if their was a major incident. There's no 100% solution, its impossible.

 

Your concerns are real @GREED, but also at the same time a little unwarranted. There's certainly no need for a future SIMS replacement to have to have 3rd party apps to provide the functionality.

 

Regards SIMS .Net, in the modern cloudy/web world, it is a legacy product now really. Sure, its current but it uses legacy concepts and platforms.

Now you are talking commercial arrangements. It will be a 'bolt on' in the technical sense as it will be different technology for different platforms, managing connections, managing what is and isn't practical to use on a small or touch device (building timetables?). This is about the commercials, do you get it included for x price - which is then just another module.
