We are a Smoothwall school but this may be reflected on other filters.

Last year, I was able to finally get this working but Google changed their API URLs and it stopped working again. What should happen is when on the Google page, you click the microphone icon or say "Ok Google", it will pop up a different page that listens for speaking and translates that into words that will be searched. But since the API changes, it doesn't.

With our Smoothwall, we added a new category for Google URLs to allow explicit allows so no-authentication was required. When I look at the filter while testing, everything looks good for the filter. We do SSL inspection and I do believe it is related to it. What is strange is on our public wireless, we disabled SSL inspection and it works fine.

So I am wondering if anybody has this working and if so, what URLs do you have allowed for Google? If not, can somebody test and see if they can get it working? Our SpecEd department would really like to use this feature for some kids.

Thanks!

koltz, I'm in the same boat as you. Were you able to figure this out?

Hi there,

I did some research on this the other night for a customer. I turned out I had to whitelist the category "web search" and then, log off of the Chromebook device I was testing from and then log back on again.

I've not heard back to hear otherwise that it didn't work, though obviously from a filtering POV, whitelisting "web search" as a whole really doesn't seem like a good thing.

To me, it's a case of what is the bigger concern:

- Being able to say "ok Google" and speak in your search, or filtering web searches for inappropriate content. I'd go with filtering over speaking my searches.
