WE COULDN’T COMPLETE THE UPDATES. UNDOING CHANGES. ERROR ON WINDOWS SERVER 2012 R2

Hi All,

 

I came across this issue today and it took me a little time to figure out so i thought i'd post the workaround here to hopefully save some time for you.

 

The issue occurs when updating a Generation 2 Guest running Windows Server 2012 R2 on a Hyper-v Cluster (not sure if it's version specific but mine is 2012 R2).

 

I was doing my updates and it installed all the updates fine, tried to reboot the machine and got the error;

 

We couldn't complete the updates

Undoing changes

Don't turn off your computer

 

Apparently it only affects Gen 2 VMs running Server 2012 R2 and i'm not sure if it's specific to a particular update or not.

 

But before running your updates you need to turn off secure boot.

 

1. Shutdown the Virtual Machine.
   
2. In the VM settings, disable Secure Boot.
   
3. Start the VM and install the updates.
   
4. Shutdown the VM and re-enable Secure Boot again.
   
5. Start up the VM.
   

 

I'm currently stuck power cycling while it tries to remove the failed updates.

 

Hopefully this will save you.

 

UPDATE: After 3 reboots and a few hours of patiently waiting it came back up and i could install the required updates.
