Just in case it helps anyone :

 

After a (successful) SQL2014 migration, SIMS client was taking 65 seconds to log in on my own workstation (fine elsewhere, 5 seconds or so). I just spent 2 days trying absolutely everything I could think of, checking file settings, using resource monitor, using process monitor, uninstalling junk, stopping services, checking UPS voltage, defragging, reinstalling, profile cleaning, memory tests, you name it. And reading dozens of threads on here, of course...

 

The answer? I needed to set the server's IP as a proxy exception in Internet Options, as that's what the Document Server uses.

...and that's why my old install notes say change the protocol to TCP and the port number to 1077

Sorry - Would you mind explaining this step by step? Where did you set the IP as a proxy exception? Does this only apply if your system utilises a proxy?

The default is HTTP 8080 - which means its it'll hit your proxy cause its HTTP and gets treated as such then you'll have to wait for your proxy to timeout trying to find your internal server. Assuming you use a proxy.

Yes, we use a proxy. So on my workstation I have the proxy details under Internet Options > Connections > LAN settings > Proxy server. Our proxy uses port 8080. Under Advanced I have IPs for things like local servers, printers etc. Foolishly I didn't have the IP of the SIMS server, whose default DMS port is also 8080.

@matt40k : Apart from my "gotcha", is there any other advantage to using 1077 rather than 8080?

Have found some AV to be "clever" and include web filtering as part of its product, so anything that it deems to be over http\web traffic gets special treatment. There are lots of little bits like that out there

Absolutely. I've just updated my wodge of SIMS gumf
