DrCheese Posted July 23, 2015 Posted July 23, 2015 We're reimaging all the computers over the summer. At present we deploy Chrome 32bit, but as Google have a 64bit MSI now I may as well deploy that. Are there any downsides to this?
rickjames Posted August 3, 2015 Posted August 3, 2015 Kinda jumping in here... Has anyone else had any issues with Chrome recently just being really slow, stuttering all over the place? It was all fine when I went away on holiday but I'm back it's proving to be a bit of a pain to use. I've done an uninstall/reinstall of 64bit and it's still freezes up occasionally for a second or so. I know it runs all the processes for different plugins/applications etc but this seems a bit excessive, no?
anthonyd Posted August 3, 2015 Posted August 3, 2015 We've just started to deploy 64bit and not seen any issues so far, although we've only had few staff in over the summer so far testing it. It also seems to work fine alongside 32bit as well with regards to the Chrome profiles loading correctly, as long as it's the same version of 32 and 64bit being used.

Have you checked Chrome's own task manager (Shift + Esc) to see what could be making it slow? When you uninstalled the browser did you delete your Chrome profile (%LocalAppData%\Google\Chrome\User Data)? Do you have a lot of bookmarks and extensions? this seems a bit excessive, no? ZeroHour Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 I switched to 64 bit (personal PC) and I too find it a lot more glitchy tbh. Just hitting new tab can result in that tab being crashed and also I have and flash playback issues with it. That's on a fresh wiped 8.1 machine as well.

To get the full benefit of this new defense in Chrome, Windows users with 64-bit systems should make sure they're using the 64-bit version of the browser. The 64-bit version of Chrome has been fine for me. Yeah I did sync in but its a fresh chrome profile otherwise, bbc news video for example was broken when I switched but it has started working again. The new tab problem actually happened before signing in, I would hit create new tab (not loading a link in a new tab) and it would have the chrome crashed tab message displayed rather than the normal window. Closing that tab or refreshing it did bring it back to life and it didnt crash the whole of chrome but it was annoying. Also Hangouts app crashes a lot more frequently now on 64 bit rather than 32 bit but it wasnt exactly stable on 32 bit either....
dblight Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 Had the same problem tonight. Weird. Uninstalled 32bit and installed 64bit and was still really laggy and slow. I too sign in with my google account and it syncs my bookmarks etc. what I did do was clear browsing data since beginning of time only unchecking my remembered passwords. Bizarrely it worked CPU started the ramp down and no problems since!
