Lightspeed - Allow YouTube?

Hi

 

I've just been looking at the lightspeed filter for another school I've recently taken over and noticed that it's not really been doing any filtering. I've applied what I thought were reasonable filter restrictions and then discovered that I've blocked youTube because YouTube is classified as adult.

 

Do I really need to allow the adult category to allow access to YouTube for Staff?

No, you don't.

 

We have created a custom category called YouTube, added in the domain YouTube.com, and set this to 'Allow' for staff.

 

Go to the Categories page under Web Filter > Add Local Category > Click Domains then search for YouTube.com and add it to the Custom Category

Do you not see 'Add A Local Category' in top right corner?

 

Is this an onsite Rocket, or one provided at LA level? If LA level or whatever then sounds like you've got to request access to the page or them to add the categories for you.

Nope, it just says Read Only.

 

It's provided by BT Lancashire who I thought were getting better recently, this has just made me so angry with them though. Probably explains the reason it was setup the way it was, might go and see if I can get Smoothwall onsite.

 

Should probably clarify that I am more annoyed because I know from Christmas I'm going to have to put up with this in more then one school from Christmas. Don't really understand why they have put it in the Adult category when there is a pefectly good audio-video category there which surely makes far more sense!

I suspect it's due to the fact that audio-visual might be allowed in schools, across the board, but you don't want YouTube for Students. It's perhaps been considered more convenient to block - and allow a route to unblock - than to unblock and rely on schools to block.

 

I think the issue is that you don't have access to some key features within the management console!

I'll call tomorrow then, have finally worked out the 4 other options I've had to enable to make it work.

 

Coming from a Smoothwall environment, lightspeed seems clunky and unintuitive and missing some of the basic features, like wildcards in search terms, I want to use.

4 other options? What are they?

Must have been a delay on some of the settings kicking in, rechecked it all this afternoon and I've had to leave Adult enabled and disable the Block google and Youtube HTTPS (fail-safe). I had disabled Disable Google Encrypted Search as well but that doesn't seem to have stopped it working now.

 

I'm sure I changed something else at the same time but can't tell what it was now, maybe I ended up going through too many menus.
