Veeam - SAN vs NAS

Hi everyone,

 

I have a HP DL380 G6 server connected up to a HP MSA60 SAN at the moment which supports up to 12TB storage. Recently I've had a few disk failures and this has now resulted in the dreaded 'All instances of storage backup corrupt' message in Veeam resulting in data loss.

 

I want to start thinking about replacing the SAN but budget is a limiting factor. A new SAN (HP 2040) is well over £4,000 and that's without disks.

 

Is there a decent rack mount NAS I could use instead? What are the drawbacks of using a NAS with Veeam over a SAN?

 

Any recommendations?

Only real downside I'd say is the speed of the disks (assuming cheaper NAS). So if you're ever going to want to run VMs direct from backup might want to take that into account.

 

But I've been looking at something like this for ours (Old SAN out of warranty so needs replacing sometime)

Would be 4Gig connection via iSCSI etc, so don't really see a downside as such.

 

Did I mention 48TB for £3k?

48TB!!! That's nuts. 12TB simply doesn't cut it for me. 180 days on disk and I'm out of space. Need something that can support more storage but don't have thousands to spend.

 

I do a full active to external HDD once a month but that takes days to run.

There's lots of smaller ones too Just was thinking future proof wise for some other archive for our end

Certainly some lovely NAS's around that price, 48TB for £2k~ QNAP TS-851 48TB (8 x 6TB WD Red) 8 Bay Desktop NAS - Ebuyer

 

Might not be best disks in the world etc, but if it's only backups etc I know I certainly don't think I'll be going SAN for backups when we replace ours
