Hi,

I'm just wondering if anyone here uses any Annual Leave software at their school?

I started looking at a few this time last year but then the whole school's budget was slashed from outside so I immediately shelved it; I'd like to start looking again either for this September or sometime during the year.

I'd be interested in something too. I have trialled a couple in the past. My web dev guys tell me they could easily knock something up internally to be fair so I'm looking for ideas more than anything

To be honest so could I, but it's yet another piece of internal software to maintain - I seem to spend half my days tweaking things in my own software instead of doing anything productive. :)

Why reinvent the wheel? Its part of your HR software, use that. If you need extra rules such as only 1 out of 3 of you on holiday at once, then you could use outlook calendar and "holiday" as a resource or room booking with a room of "Home" and max capacity of 1

What part of our HR software (that you probably don't know which we use) includes a web-based or application-based interface to allow staff to request annual leave, then allow their line manager to authorise or decline it before populating it straight into a master overview so that the HR staff can see who is in when?

I've just come across a completely free open-source one which seems to do everything we need.

Jorani an open source Leave and Overtime Management System

There's a demo at Login - Jorani

Set up users, auth by LDAP, assign line manager, assign HR staff, email notification of requests, one-click accept/deny within the email, assign leave entitlement, calendars per workgroup/department/whole school etc.

I've downloaded to install next week and have a go.

You've literally describe what our (any) HR system does. If you HR provider (LA?) doesn't provide you with access, then raise it. I know we're only now rolling out access based on feedback. Just seems stupid to setup yet another system to duplicate data because someone didn't create you an account on the main system that already exists. It also has the added bonus that if you add overtime/expenses, it actually results in your getting paid it!

We're an Academy with everything in house. I have access to the support site for our Payroll (not HR) package which doesn't mention anything like this. We don't have a dedicated HR package - SIMS does the staff employment & history etc, Payroll does the money side of it including overtime and leave history for the purposes of calculating pay.

Having thought further, we used to use LA for HR and Payroll until this time last year when we brought Payroll in house. LA uses an awful Citrix VPN connection which I used to get called to regularly, but haven't been for a while, which is why I don't think we use them for HR any more.

I will ask the Payroll software people if they have any facility for this - they mention 'Holiday management' on their features list on the website, but I can't see anything in the support site about end-users requesting leave etc within it.
