Early Hacking 1970s?

Just been talking to a friend of mine who was talking about a TV program on last week about hacking and catching one of the first network hackers. I ether read something on here or reddit about it but cant really remember any details. It was something to do with university networks and then hacking the pentagon. I remember seeing a picture of this persons name written on a network cabinet and it being a really interesting article. They knew something was happening but had to sit and watch and fiigure out what was going on. It's driving me mad trying to remember what it was.

When I was a lad (in the 1970s) I enjoyed reading a mag called "Undercurrents" that had a lot of counter culture stuff including phone phreaking etc - might be amusing to read if anyone can find them online

 

*edit* well - if only I had typed it into Wikipedia - I can see I'm going to waste a few hours now...
