anyone got this working properly?

 

it seemed ok when I tested it the teacher even got it working for one lesson but now when kids load it they get an error cannot open udp port 4558

 

any ideas sorry its vague its at a school im not at till next Tuesday (and they didn't even mention it till Tuesday just gone which was also the 1st time id even heard of the software ) but apparently their next 15 lessons NEED it

 

firewall is off which is what I get if I google the error (well it says open up ports x/y/z)

With sonic-pi closed, check task manager for scsynth.exe - if it's there, kill it and try opening sonic-pi again.

 

If that works, it might be worth creating a simple script to do this that the teacher can run if they hit problems.

will have a look but supposedly even a reboot dosent cure it (but as I said im not there so they might by "being convenient with the truth" about reboots

It's worth a try - there have been various issues reported on the GitHub site about running on Windows 7, many of which are caused by scsynth not exiting properly, and this "fix" has worked for many.

 

I'm a cynic - I never believe a thing my users tell me until I've seen it with my own two eyes!

think I have it cracked though the solution is terrible but it just looks like whoever coded the software isn't great at it (I could be wrong but that's my read) basically ive got a batch file to start it

taskkill /im sonic-pi.exe /f
taskkill /im scsynth.exe /f

so loads the program, waits 15 seconds, force kills the 2 processes it spawns then loads the program again. Its a terrible solution but it seems to work

Don't think that's a fair statement because there's a problem on one platform - this was originally written for Linux/Raspbian but by it's open source nature has been compiled for other platforms. The original programmer doesn't actually maintain the Windows version himself. Plus there are known problems with the Windows versions which are well documented.

 

Glad you've found a solution, but not fair to take a pop at FOSS because you've had to write a 6 line script to make it work... I'd be more understanding if you were paying for it!

 

EDIT: and in that vain, it is open source so feel free to fix it

ok ill rephrase it the person converting it to windows from Linux maybe didn't test it as much as I would prefer. Granted I couldn't do any better my programming sux. I suspect its more to do with conversion from linux to windows its just sometimes id rather have nothing than a weird program

I don't know about anybody else, but when I run the script it loads Sonic Pi. All well and good. The problem being that the rest of the script doesn't run until Sonic Pi has been closed. e.g. Close Sonic Pi manually and the PING 1.1.1.1 line then runs....

i was running the script because it diddnt load first time if it loads first time you dont need the script
