Arthur Posted June 8, 2015 Posted June 8, 2015 (edited) a.k.a 10.11. Source: Apple (via The Verge) Today, Apple announces the latest version of its Mac operating system: OS X El Capitan. Two big areas of focus for the new OS: experience and performance. Apple's Craig Federighi detailed the major changes in the new release, starting off with an overhaul to the Safari web browser. You can now pin sites in the tab bar just by dragging them to the left. The address bar is also becoming the spot to find which tab audio is playing from and mute it directly. Beyond Safari, Spotlight search has been improved with the ability to respond to queries in natural language, such as asking it to find "documents I worked on in June." It can also look up weather, stocks, and games scores. There's a new Notes app as well as an improved Mission Control interface for better window management. The latter now includes a Split View, which splits the screen into two halves, one for each app. On the performance front, Apple's citing some significant numbers. Apps are said to open 1.4 times faster in El Capitan, app switching is twice as fast, and PDF files open up four times faster in the Preview app. Apple is also bringing Metal to the Mac, having first introduced it on iOS last year. It supplants OpenGL for graphics rendering, offering up to 40 percent greater rendering efficiency. A good looking demo of the Unreal Engine on the new OS X was accompanied by a note from Epic Games saying the company saw efficiency improvements as high as 70 percent. Video games have generally been an afterthought on OS X, but perhaps this change with Metal could spur developers to invest more time and resources into bringing their games to Apple's desktop platform. rich_tech Posted June 9, 2015 Posted June 9, 2015 (edited) Thats the bit I wanted to see and managed to miss last night about OS X El Capitan I had to sit through an iOS 9 promo telling me my ipad mini is now out of date and going to lack features of the "full version" of that release, news looked decent enough and the WatchOS presentation with a forgettable bill gates clone who had little presence and I have zero interest in and followed by a clunky music presentation, which doesn't look all that bad, but we can wait and see the UK prices there I think. GrumbleDook Posted June 9, 2015 Posted June 9, 2015 The music service worries me a bit, as I can see them ditching iTunes Music Match ... A very handy service even if it does muck up assigning things as audiobooks. You make an audiobook in GarageBand, export to iTunes and it is a music track. You are left unable to changed the type to an audiobook so it is the right area. You have to turn off iTMM to do it and if iTunes has already uploaded it then when you turn iTMM back on it changes the audiobook back to a music track. Frustrating, and the 3 support calls on it have eventually resulted in being shipped between the GarageBand team, the iTunes team and the iTunes Store team. Eventually one of the customer service team (I'd complained about the rudeness and arrogance of the last iTunes Store support 'manager' I spoke with .... A story for another day) did a bit of research, even spoke to an ADE, and came back with a little programme he had found that allows you to package mp3s as iTunes compatible audiobooks. It means they don't get upload to the iTMM service, but I am happy with that anyway. Now I can see that the iTMM service will go because a) I am sure that the revenue is not that big, b) the music industry would be happier with royalties from a streaming, subscription service where all tracks are treated equally and c) it gets rid of pirated, poor-quality tracks being changed to high qualities, DRM free tracks.

GrumbleDook Posted July 23, 2015 Posted July 23, 2015 Been running it on a VM with few issues. It started crashing Photos a lot but a rebuild of the library sorted that. General file access on office 2016 is good but saving back to local network mapped drive is buggy (says it cannot find it, etc) ... Not really tried anything else yet.
frazzlesgrant Posted July 23, 2015 Posted July 23, 2015 Been running it for a little while now on my Macbook, been pretty good so far, no major issues other than a couple of programs crashing every now and then.
4585 Posted July 23, 2015 Posted July 23, 2015 THink I may take the safe approach and run it as a virtual machine. After a 2 fauly hard drive failures recently, I can;t be going through the stress if it does bugger anything else up.
