Exchange 2003 Store Moveover

Hi folks

 

I need to think about moving our mailbox store which is currently sitting on a hard drive which is a bit short on space. I have got another drive on the same server which I would like it moving over too. Is it just simple case of me shuttdown the services, moving the store over to the other disk and pointing the store to the other location.

 

I am not sure if this will make a difference. Currently the store is sitting on some nice WD raptor 10000 rpm disks on a RAID 1 array and accessing mails are easily retrieved. I am planning on moving it to a bigger RAID 5 array using enterprise level WD SATA II disks. Will I notice a big performance degration if i did this?

No, it's a simpler case of doing it in the GUI. You change the paths somewhere in the properties for the store in Exchange Manager and that does all the service stopping, moving & starting for you.

Personally I would not recommend putting the mail store on a raid 5 array due to having problems in the past with corruption. I think its much safer to have it on 1 single hard disk with a good backup instead but I'm just speaking from my experiences.

 

Mail retrieval should be fine on most types of disk, especially if its not the operating system drive.

 

Oh and yes, moving the mail store is very easy, you just need to dismount it in exchange and change the setting. there are knowledge base articles on how to do it.
