Checkpoint a vm with SQL running. Anyone doing this?

Sorry if this is double posted but cant find the one I created earlier.

 

So MS do not support checkpoints for a vm with SQL running but I wondered if anyone was doing it anyway or shutting down the server first, which is also not supported by MS.

 

Both host and vm's are Server 2012r2 and the SQL software is 2012 Express.
