Looking for Streaming server

We are looking at streaming server (A cheap alternative) to proper server so we dont have to spend a lot of money and still achieve our objective.

 

Any suggestions?

The objective is to stream the FTA channels in UK to our selected devices which is quiet straight forward.

Ah okay, so you're not looking at digitising existing content but instead bouncing around the FTA services?

 

In theory, what would be your maximum concurrent users do you think? There are some consumer-grade devices that might be able to help but would probably not scale well.

 

Is access to iPlayer etc. not deemed good enough? More and more systems are moving towards live streams of their channels, I believe the replacement for 4OD is one example of this happening.

I personally use Plex. Doesn't need much spec to run. Just drive space. It will happily run on a duel core with 4GB ram. Plus, If you want to add media boxes. You can use a Raspberry PI AKA Rasplex. Honestly. Ill be surprised if you cant find a media box it wont run on. You can setup accounts and even push video's to a device to start playing. With my little duel core iv ran HD films on 15+ devices at once with a 1GB connection.

Ive built one recently. Works on iPad, android, flash, chrome, Firefox, IE ...

 

You need a Linux server.

Latest ffmpeg to stream the m3u8 to have it compatible with iPads.

Ffserver to stream webm for chrome, android and Firefox .

 

You takes your live stream source and pass it to ffmpeg and ffserver and point your client to the correct URL. I've used a php script to detect the user agent to redirect the client to the correct URL.
