Tropical fish keepers?

Anyone keep tropical fish on the forums?

 

We just gained a betta fish. We added this little thing to our main tank. And he was tanked by something or someone.

 

 

We got him a tank to his self atm. May add a tank cleaner later on.

We have had a tropical aquarium for a long time.

 

The male ancistrus (Bristle Nose Catfish) has been with us 13 years and our 2 clown loaches aren't much younger.

 

We have a hillstream loach, a couple of corydoras and an assortment of barbs and tetras.

 

The tank lights are off for the night now. Will take a pic tomorrow

That Siamese fighting fish you have are a bit of a pain. They nip other fish and will fight to the death with another male Siamese fighting fish. Yours doesn't look in the best of shape to be honest.

He been attacked by the one of the other fish. That why he's in a tank of his own.

There's a reason they're always on their own in the aquarium shops. Fighting fish cannot share a communal tank as they cause too much trouble.

 

Mind you angel fish are capable of chewing their tank mates. Whilst not aggressive, I am pretty sure our Clown Loaches are responsible for some chewed fins over the years... They definitely cleared the snail problem from the tank.

Angel fish have been responsible for a few disappearance in the past in mine, im sure of it. Where is it the snails come from? I assume its the plants or something?

The snails came in on live plants. When we got the Clown Loaches we would see them swimming round carrying the snails in their mouths... within a few months the snails had gone. They had a good go at the gazillion baby platies we had too... but there were too many... I had to murder those! We don't keep live-bearers now Edited March 27, 2015 by elsiegee40

From what I have heard, you need to avoid colourful tank mates ... and anything that can't resist nipping fins e.g. angel fish, tiger barbs, clown loaches....

Ok. Betta fish we had didn't make it. He had a disease which he picked up when he moved tanks. We treated hin but didn't make it. The water levels are fine.

 

We upgraded our main tank in our living room. From a 80L to a 150L (great bargain included stand, heater and few other bits.)

 

All set up and running for the last month.

 

We got a few more fish to go in there.

 

6 bronze corys

5 sailfin molly

1 ruby shark

5 Leopard danio

3 golden swordtail

2 shrimps

1 Feather fin catfish

1 cherry barb

1 loach

1 red eyed tetra.

 

All happy family. Loads of plants.

 

We do weekly water changes. And when I stick my hand in I get greated my sharky.

New to Edugeek and been linked to this thread from my welcome post. Big fish keeper, had a few tanks over the years! Currently I have a 3 foot with an Axolotl, and i'm just in the process of cycling and sump plumbing a 4x2x2 which i'll either have an Oscar in, or a pair of breeding convicts. I'd be careful about introducing too many fish at once and do it in a steady process in my experience it doesn't go well here's my tank and you guys have reminded I need to do some maintenance

Having a lot of hassle getting this sump to work smoothly - it's my first time running a tank with a sump, and even at the highest flow rate im really not seeing a benefit over a good canister - other than the water volume and hidden heater! Tanks still cycling but I've never had a tank look so filthy!

Call it "recently cleaned" I didn't dare photograph it before... the summer months green it up fast even though it's in a shady room. We try to clean it fortnightly, but it slips to three weeks on occasion.

 

Our little hillstream loach does its best to clean the entire tank, but the UV pump on the back wall helps to keep the green under control too. The main pump is an external fluval 305.

 

As for lighting, it has 2 x 22" tubes that are changed considerably less frequently than they should be. They are on for 9 hours a day.

Wow! I've got an aqua one pro 1250 external filter got a Day-Glo and a different bulb type that I cant remember off hand. Basically one great for the plants and one for the fish which as you can see the plants have taken over a bit. and I clean mine probably once a month give or take a few days. to be fair the corys and clowne loach and recently deceased bristle nose plec clean up well. got a good mix of top mid and bottom feeders and I've found that's key to a lazy aquarium

Our bottom feeders combined (bristlenose, 3 corydoras and a couple of clown loaches) are nowhere near as effective as the hillstream loach. It's just over an inch long and we've had it about a year (we had 2 but one didn't last long). It never stops eating. It's cleaned the decor up a treat :

 

Will you replace the bristle nose? Ours is a bit of a character. We've had him for 14 years and we'll miss him when he goes.

Interesting that you have gone for two pumps. We found the 305 alone didn't give enough circulation, but combined with the In tank UV filter we seem to be OK. When the weather was very oppressive for a couple of weeks last summer, we did have to chuck an air stone in too.

More is better in my case- was finding that the external 206 and an internal eheim just wasnt enough!

As you can see I over stock my tanks quite a bit so need that extra power- I also have a large air stone in the back which really helps.

My biggest issue is that I like to feed my fish fresh veg and if your not careful the smell can become horrible and that doesnt seem to happen after I have added the extra external filter!

 

Last summer was horrible- temperatures were just soaring all the time. Opened the lid and window above it to let the air cool things down!
