School Website

Was just wondering who/what everyone uses for there school website.

 

One of my Primary schools has a massively outdated website that costs them ridiculous money to change even little things. Now they can have a new site built, but I was wondering if anyone makes there school site in house and hosts it in house and what you use to do it (software and hardware), and if you (IT people) or someone like admin can modify it?

 

Was thinking of wordpress as that's the only thing I know that would be easy to setup and work for the school?

I think there's another recent thread that's similar to this... I moved my school site to Schudio (School Website Design | App | Wall | Web | VoiceSchool Website Design from Schudio) after a couple of weeks of using it for the ANME website - the back end's designed for schools so really easy to manage and update, the support's been great, they transferred all the old site content, and the whole process took less than 8 weeks...

 

Can't rate them highly enough... PM me if you want to know more :-)

haha nothing to do with Anime I can assure you, but you're not the first person to think that, and you wouldn't be the first person to call it that too! lol...

 

It's the Association of Network Managers in Education - pretty much how it sounds... a networking group arranging meetings (only been in the North West so far, but will be arranging some down south soon), free to join, free to attend, we've got a trip to Sophos's HQ in Oxfordshire in a couple of weeks that's free too... We've got 300+ members now, mostly in the UK... Not just for people with Network Manager in the title either - it's for whoever's got the day to day responsibility of managing the network & school IT...

We've just finishing rolling our own which we host on-site on a Windows 2012R2 IIS server. The new site is fully html5 and was built with nothing but sweat, tears and Notepad++. Took 2 of us about 4 months part time to get it built. Staff have direct file mapping to their part of the website (so they can upload homework, pdf's etc which is displayed through a php script I found), twitter accounts to update the department news sections and my team edit the static pages when necessary. It's a massive success and parents and governors love it.

We're in a similar position to you, and Wordpress (or maybe Joomla, or maybe Django) is what we are considering. Setting up a locally hosted server should certainly be simple enough (should be pretty much "apt-get install wordpress"), and there's plenty of Wordpress templates available if you don't want to do a whole site design from scratch.

I've never got my head around WordPress, there's just something about it I don't like lol... Our previous one was done in Concrete5, and that was pretty good, though there aren't as many plugins for it...
