Virtual Reality Headset

So I am looking at buying a new phone (I know your thinking this is a gaming forum!)

and I know the Christmas biggy is going to be VR.

so I wondered if you could use current mobile equipment to run VR

I saw this....

I haven't and VR really isn't going to be the Christmas biggy, it's a gimmick currently at best, an expensive gimmick at that.

Isn't Valve teaming up with HTC? So I think you'd need an HTC, and probably something pretty powerful. The M9 when its released perhaps?

I know Morpheus on the PS4 isn't due till next spring. If Valve and Facebook (Oculus) are working to similar time lines then I wouldn't bet on it being this Christmases must have, maybe next - if at all.

 

To my mind the one to watch is Microsoft, their HoloLens looks like a more sensible take on the whole VR/3D/Immersive glasses technology.

I've not tried it but am tempted to now! I'm also considering an Oculus Rift when the commercial version hits the streets but I see that it might be problematic when you can't see where your peripherals are, so might turn into a bit of a gimmick. On the other hand, for racing, the ability to look around, particularly into apexes should be a real advantage.

I have an oculus MK 1 but the issue I have is I need it to be plugged directly in to the PC rather than use USB extender (my PC is under stairs and I play in the front room on my TV, and I do not want to sit on the stairs)

I have never tried extending it using a hub so I do not know if that would work, but I am currently looking in to buying some really good quality USB extenders (all cables are run under the floor!) as the ones I have do not work with the Oculus.

So I was looking at the possibility of using a mobile (because it can be run Wirelessly) and then I can sell the Oculus before it becomes worth even less than it is now! with the edtracker this may be the best option!
