Office 365 email back up and/or litigation hold?

Has anyone taken any steps so they can retrieve historical emails from Office 365 if required to do so? The available 3rd party backup solutions look expensive. Has anyone worked out exactly what litigation hold means and can you apply it to all mail boxes?
