iPad streaming to TV via HDMI?

Just been asked this question by daughters boyfriend and honestly have no idea so consulting the enlightened masses!

He wants to connect his iPad to his TV via HDMI (needs to buy a cable first and wants a cheap one) which on the surface seems fine, but I seem to remember reading that Apple only allow certain videos to be streamed to an external source i.e. ones from the iTunes library and not from a website, am I correct and if so, are there any other limitations?

How do I connect an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch to my TV?

 

Apple sells a Lightning Digital AV Adapter that accomplishes the same thing. (A 30-pin version of the adapter is also available if you have an older iOS device.) This is essentially an HDMI adapter for your iOS device: On one end, there's a Lightning plug (or 30-pin adapter for older devices) and on the other is an HDMI port. Use any HDMI cable to go from the adapter to your TV's HDMI port. The TV doesn't need to support MHL.

 

The $49 Lightning adapters work with all iPhones, iPads and iPod touches with the Lightning port. The $39 30-pin digital AV adapter requires an iPhone 4, iPad 2 second generation, or iPod touch fourth generation or later.

 

Either the above or if he already has a computer connected to his tv he can install an air sharing server type app ie air server ( http://www.airserver.com ) or buy an apple tv

He has a PC he connects to his TV and has a Chromecast adaptor plugged into his TV, think its just easier to connect his iPad where his TV is using a cable and he cant get the websites he wants via the Chromecast device. So, so long as he gets the correct cable he should be OK? No restrictions on what the iPad will allow to be streamed then?

Ive never tried over one of those cables so not a clue. I have x mirage on os x and when I was looking it was between air server and x mirage ( as these were cheaper than getting the cable kit from apple / an apple tv )

 

Software solutions seem to work with pretty much anything I have tried

 

If he defo wants the cable kit solution then get it and try it

 

Normally on the buy it page on apples site there is a question and answer section along with some reviews etc. See what others have said or look on amazon as am sure amazon sell them to and lots of reviews on amazon

 

Maybe someone else has had the av kit and can comment further on this

Just thinking I have an iPad to vga adaptor in my office, I'll have a try tomorrow. Thanks for the suggestions anyway.

My daughter uses a Lightning to HDMI adapter when she wants to watch Netflix at her mum's house.

A quick read of the reviews on the Apple site, suggest it's iTunes movies that don't play via the output not the other way round.

also some things like sky sports app wont output to the tv iirc it can be coded into an app to dissalow external display
