BT HomeHub5 wireless issues

Ive put this in General as its not a work related issue.

 

I swapped to BT infinity about 2 months ago from Sky. The BT HomeHub is causing lots of issues with dropped wifi especially on anything Apple and also the PS3. Seems lots of customers complain of the same thing. One of the solutions people say is to swap out the homehub for another router.

 

My question is : As I still have the Sky Router and the separate modem can I just connect them back in again as long as I can get the BT credentials out of the HomeHub? Do they still use credentials? I always had better wifi with the Sky router.

 

Both Sky and BT are on fibre connections.

Are they actual fibre connections (i.e. fibre optic terminal screwed in to the back) or FTTC (i.e. telephone line)?

 

BT don't use credentials AFAIK, so just about any router will do (so long as you get the right type, ADSL/Fibre)... except for Sky! Sky do use credentials and there's no way of changing them that I know of on the router. You can try it, but I doubt it will work because it'll be sending credentials and presumably expect an auth response, which I wouldn't have thought it will get.

If you have an ethernet connection from your fiber to your router from an ONT then chances are you will be using PPPoE which you will need credentials for... typically your BT login details.

 

Could be wrong... not seen how they deploy there fiber.

 

 

Also BT may of locked your Home Hubs MAC address into there system for your connection, hooking up another router may not work as the MAC will be different.

It's known across all of their forums.

 

I've reverted back to the Home Hub 3.

 

No issues here.

Its telephone line. Fibre to the exchange which is less than 15 metres from my front door.

You will need a username if you use a different router. It is:

Password field can be left blank, but some people have reported that you can use BT of your router won't let you proceed without entering one.

On the BT HH5 you can split the 2.4 and 5ghz frequencies into two SSIDs. When I bought my iPad I had the same problem but splitting the frequencies and connecting different devices to the two SSIDs helped. Google should help as I cannot remember the process...

I read that too. Will be trying that later today.
