Zimbra to Gmail via Google apps for education

Hi All,

 

Anyone done the above, looking at moving towards Google Apps for education, just wanting to know what the required steps are and how to migrate the Zimbra mail over to G-mail,

 

Need to get my head round this as it looks after much cajoling and pushing from me that my line manager (Who dislikes the thought of having services in the cloud) has finally succumbed and we could be going this route.

 

Any help would be greatly accepted,

We had to get staff to set up an IMAP mailbox to their new GMail inbox within Zimbra, then drag any mail they wanted to keep into there. We had to run sessions on a INSET day to get everyone sorted.

 

This was a couple of years ago so there might be a better way now.

Hi Bossman,

 

We used to use Zimbra then like you, we moved over to Google Apps. We had to do it the hard way but Google has a pretty good tool that will make this easier for you. Take a look at the Google Apps Migration for Microsoft Exchange (GAMME) tool. It can migrate from Exchange OR from IMAP, assuming your Zimbra install is running IMAP. The challenge really depends on the number of users you have to migrate over and the amount of data. One way we have handled this for clients is to leverage AWS (or another other cloud provider). We'll load the GAMME tool on multiple AWS EC2 instances, then have them run simultaneously to handle the email migration. We've found this to work quite well. For Zimbra, we've only moved over email accounts and not anything else like calendars.
