Dealing with pages files on Linux & Windows

It is well known that if you have a .pages file from a Mac and you try to view it on a non-Mac box, that the best you can do is open the file with a zip program and extract the preview.pdf file to see the first page of the document. What happens if you want to view the whole document and, like us, when you upload it to a Mac it says you need a newer version of Pages and even when you upgrade Pages, it still says that you need a newer version? In this case we have Mavericks and the file was created on Yosemite and it seems as though the two versions of Pages are incompatible. (Have Apple been to the Microsoft school of software development?)

 

Upload the file to Google Docs and when it tries to open said file, it will complain that it can't open the file and point you at CloudConvert. Use CloudConvert to convert the file to .pdf and let it load it back to your Google Docs. Problem solved - you can download the pdf and see the entire document.

 

The student whose work was due today, and decided to submit it using pages, owes me several beers (probably ginger nuts as the pub on the corner won't let the student in).

You could always just open the file at https://www.icloud.com The online versions of pages, number, keynote work quite well enough. Edited February 24, 2015 by furby

The icloud answer only works if you have an Apple device, where as I wanted a solution for those without such.

You can use iCloud on a Windows or Linux machine. The staff do here, various routes from iPad to Mac to Windows etc.

 

I agree the incompatible version is a bit annoying/strange. Have had to deal with it a couple of times.

Nope. iCloud.com works on Windows (and other OSs) as long as you have a compatible browser.

I have used it on a couple of occasions to open incompatible Pages documents.
