jamwatn Posted February 23, 2015 Posted February 23, 2015 Hi As I was taking the dog for a walk this evening I was wondering if it would be possible to map wifi access points, onto a map using gps as I walked. I'm sure google did this but the naughty way. I'd be doing it purely to find open wifi and out of curiosity showing all the names on a map. Couldn't reveal any software online to do this..any ideas anyone?
synaesthesia Posted February 23, 2015 Posted February 23, 2015 Netstumbler would probably do just that, worth a look! Didn't ever try it on a large scale (bit naughty!) but could be useful for more legal purposes.
jamwatn Posted February 23, 2015 Author Posted February 23, 2015 Mozilla Stumbler sort of does what I want but it appears to upload it all and you cant see all the AP's you have collected or the names! Is there some sort of legality issue of what I'd like to do?
Chris_ Posted February 23, 2015 Posted February 23, 2015 Netstumbler (bit outdated now though) will do this when paired up with a GPS device. You can then use various online services to convert the GPS log in to a map of hotspots. It's been a while since I messed around with this. There's probably various apps for smartphones that will do it all now as nearly all have wifi and GPS.
bossman Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 @jamwatn FastConnect-WiFi made easy is an app which is free to download for your Mob and this maps out wherever you are free wifi spots and helps you connect. https://service.thecloud.net/assets/fastconnect/ Have fun
Arreks Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 Searching for open networks and noting them down is certainly legal, if they are public then.. they are public. It's only when you go around pentesting public networks that people get a bit edgy and rightly so.
