Inspection of HTTPS traffic

Due to the movement of Google towards HTTPS only searches we are going to have to move towards the interception, inspection and filtering of HTTPS traffic, technically this is perfectly within our abilities due to our SmoothWall, however given the glaring warning on the appropriate configuration page "WARNING: Local laws may require that you warn your users before decrypting and inspecting HTTPS data. It is recommended that you check with legal representation before setting this option to "Never".". Are any EduGeekers aware of any UK legislation which might affect our choice to carry out this style of filtering?

IANAL but... Update your School's IT/AUP Policies and you should be fine. Plenty of businesses and schools do this in the UK already.

Having the HTTPS inspection warning on can actually cause problems as I found out. A teacher was trying to launch a YouTube URL from a Word document without launching Internet Explorer first, so youtube (https) loaded up broken. The solution was to open Internet Explorer first and accept the warning message then load the YouTube URL from the Word document, YouTube would then display correctly.
