Is there a way to stop pupils closing programs?

Strange one I know and on iPads etc you can set up single app mode, but a teacher has asked if there is a way in which they can stop their pupils (primary ks1) from closing the program they should be using.

You can via single app mode on iPad. But I would have thought that would be a bit of a pain to do every single lesson.
