I'm moving web hosting to Vidahost and as part of the package Vidahost also provide DNS hosting. At the moment Capita look after the DNS hosting (it's a *.sch.uk address) but it seems silly paying Capita to do it if it comes free with Vidahost and I get a control panel so I can make changes without waiting for Capita to do it.

So the question is how do I make Vidahost the authoritative DNS?

In the Vidahost control panel I've made A, CNAME and MX record changes just need it to become live.

You need to get the nameservers for your domain changed so they point to Vidahost rather than Capita. Fairly straightforward if you're not planning on actually changing any records yet as both locations will have consistent data. Once you make the change everything should be replicated and pointing to Vidahost fairly quickly (typically within 24-48hrs).

Your domain registrar should be able to assist with getting the domain nameserver records changed, or alternatively you could look at porting the domain to Vidahost to manage as well as the DNS record.

Ah capita to vidahost. We did that over Christmas, well it would have been if Capita didn't delay things!

You need to tell Capita to cancel your hosting before they will transfer your dns, after that everything goes very quickly. Touch wood vidahost have been very good for us.

We host all our DNS ouselves (using a 3rd party for resilience) - it took us about 6 months to finally get our 2 domains out of Capita / Openhive. It seemed that no-body at Openhive actually understood how to transfer a domain name!

Yes we are cancelling the hosting from end of March so that's not a problem and we too have found Vidahost very good and a lot cheaper.

@Soulfish How do I find out who our domain registrar is?

@Jobos yes that would sound correct. From experience they seem to only be willing to action the change when you confirm you are leaving. At least that's what happened with us.

The wheels are in motion to port the domain from Capita to Vidahost and perhaps I should have asked this question earlier but our DNS forwarders are set to

92.43.65.1 ns-cache-1.embc.uk.com

92.43.65.2 ns-cache-2.embc.uk.com

which I think are Capita's servers. As we are leaving Capita what do I set the forwarders to?

But there is a tick box In the Vida host system that will put in their default nameservers and kick your new hosting into life.

These forwarders will be set on the local network.

92.43.65.1 ns-cache-1.embc.uk.com

92.43.65.2 ns-cache-2.embc.uk.com

It's starting to become little clearer now thanks. The email from Vidahost support about moving DNS just said

You will need to change the nameservers on the domain to the following:

ns1.vidacloud.co.uk

ns2.vidacloud.co.uk

So how would I word the ticket to Capita? Don't want them getting confused :D

I asked capita to change the dns tag to vidahost IPSTAG "thermal" once the tag has transferred Vida host can change the name server records.

Have you setup the transfer within Vidahost? It will tell you what to change the tag to and then when Capita to do that Vidahost will update and the domain will become manageable within their system.

I think support will have to do this at Vidahost as their order system doesn't recognise .sch.uk.

If you don't change the IPSTAG Capita will still be in control of the domain.

Thanks. This is the info Vidahost should have given me. I've found the domain transfer page and your right.. there is no .sch.uk listed but plenty of other ones I've never heard of.
