OK, an odd one.

I've replicated this in both Office 2010 and Office 2013. The scenario:

A user has an Excel spreadsheet open for working on during most of the day. Whilst this is running, they switch to Outlook and want to send an email with an Excel file attached (a different file)

When attaching the file, the user has the preview pane showing in the file browser. As soon as they click an Excel file, the email minimises and it switches to the open spreadsheet in the background :-/ ????

Switch the preview pane off and the problem disappears. Problem is, they like using the preview to make sure they are sending the correct file.

Anybody else come across this and know how to fix it? It's not serious I know but rather an annoyance having to bring up the email again each time.

Cheers
