Recover Mac User Folder - FileVault

Evening all

 

I've been asked to look at a drive Forman old iMac that has stopped working. Long story short, the iMac belonged to a good friend of a friend who died young last year. Basically, the computer has had it, but the drive seems to be accessible, though it looks like they might have encrypted their home folders etc.

 

Anyway, I'm trying to see if I'm able to recover the photos from it without them having to send it off to a specialist recovery firm so just wondering if anyone has any pointers.

 

I've tried booting from the drive via USB on my MacBook Pro, but I seem to remember there being a thing that you can't boot to a drive from a Mac if that drive had an older version of OSX on it than your Mac ships with.

 

Any pointers would be welcome, as having a quick browse just as an external drive isn't showing anything in the home folders.
