OWA Backup

Was just wondering how others would offer users a means to backup/archive emails when they use OWA. It would seem if they wanted to backup emails, the users should dump it into a pst, is that right?

You have an option to dump to PST in OWA? Where is that? Or are you talking from the exchange box?

There should be no reason for individuals to backup e-mails, assure them that their e-mail is safely backed up every night as part of your backup procedure, that should be more than adequate.

 

Dumping e-mails into a PST is not recommended, as they tend to be huuuge files, and take up a lot of room on your network, and are also much more insecure than leaving them in exchange.

For your info, there is a program that will dump emails into a PST files.

It says it is for switching between mail servers, but you can back upto PSt files... tho i wouldnt recommend it for Daily backups. Buy your self veritas Backup (now called symantec) and get the exchange backup plugin.

Windows has a built in Backup for Exchange.....

 

In the exchange settings you can configure the backup

Thanks for all the replies. Backup is probably a bad word to use in this situation as the reason why I'm looking at this is because certain members of staff are constantly exceeding their quotas insisting they need to keep a record of their emails. I'd rather not have them archive their mails to pst on a network drive but I cant keep increasing quotas.

 

Yes i know that even if they archive their emails individualy all im doing is moving the data around but im just looking into this to see what others are doing.

Personally I'd just extend their quotas, it's easier! I don't think you can export to a PST file from OWA, only the full version of Outlook.

 

What size have you got quotas set at??

I know that you can do it using a paid product called pstway thats an addon, and yes owa doesnt do it but outlook does. One member has gone up to 100MB now.
