Hi all

We have a very outdated backup exec server and a now new VRanger server. Currently we have no space to spare on our backup exec server so it got me thinking that potentially space could be saved.

Anyone with this setup will know that VRanger runs its own backup to disk however we then have backup exec taking that folder and replicating it to its own disk with further compression before then going to tape.

So essentially my question is if it is possible to get backup exec just to take the VRanger folder and put it straight to tape before it turning it into its own type of file?

We stage everything on disk before sending it to tape. I believe that full backups on remote systems straight to tape can work well. Incrementals can be more problematic. When writing to tape, I think that to stream effectively, you need to keep the tape streamer fed with data, so have a good path from remote system, across the network and to the tape drive. Bottle necks can cripple backup performance. Loads of small files can cause issues too.
