Hi ,

this is my first post so bare with me :)

im in the Group policy management and created a policy for the "staff internet preferences" at the school i work at, within the policy on active directory , i have gone onto the settings where there is no settings defined for computer configuration and created the policy for user configuration. when i have then gone into details and changed the GPO status to computer config settings disabled it doesn't work, even though there is nothing in there, when i click enable it then works , can somebody explain this?

secondly if i change the GPO status to enabled will this take into effect and load other computer configurations from different policies, or just on that single policy? therefore slowing down log in time etc......?

many thanks Jordan!

Ok this is slightly hard to understand so let me get this right. You have gone into Group Policy Management on your Active Directory Server? You already have your OU's setup so for example

Staff OU

Staff User 1

Staff User 2

Students OU

Student User 1

Student User 2

And then you're trying to apply a group policy for Internet Preferences per OU (so all users in a particular OU will be assigned this Group Policy) is this correct?

If so it should be just about right clicking the policy going to Edit - User Configuration - blah blah. and setting up the Group Policy how you want and then enable the link between your "Group Policy Objects Folder" to that particular OU.

Hope this helps if you need any other help or this is wrong please feel free to PM me.

Welcome to the forum! =]

Could be a number of things depending on your setup.

Is loopback processing enabled? Is this GPO applied to a user or computer OU? Are there any WMI filters or security group filters in place?

PM if you want some more directed help (slow afternoon over here).

thanks for getting back to me, this is my first time looking at GPO, ill send you some screen shots,

GPO2.jpg

this screenshot shows that i have no settings or policies in the computer configuration ,

yet if i disable just the computer policy, in screen shot 2 , the policy wont work.

GPO1.jpg

if i enable it the policy works and applies.

the question is if i enable it, and then it looks at the computer configuration , will this slow down the computer and/or will it look at other computer configuration policies ...... or just its own computer configuration on that one policy,

many thanks,

jordan

Be sure to check the exact wording of what you're disabling. Make sure it's definitely the computer settings that show as disabled (not the user settings).

on the GPO status when its status is "computer configuration settings disabled" the policy wont work although there is no computer configuration settings, only user configuration. when the status is "enabled" it works fine....... im baffled.

Try running a Resultant Set of Policy wizard for the computer/user you're testing with, once with the policy Enabled and once with Computer Configuration Disabled - see if there's any difference.
